Influence of Authoritarian Pressure on Human Decision Making

Judgment in the perspective of decision making, a judgement could be expressed as the capability to determine. It refers to considerations and inspirations behind the decisions, which are the outcomes of the judgments.

Abstract:

The study aims at measuring a subject's predisposition to listen to authority figures when given instructions conflicting their morals. The hypothesis was that humans inherently obey authority figures from very early in life.

Design of the experiment:

The subjects were briefed to believe that they were conducting a memory study on other people who were in reality, actors. They were supposed to administer an electric shock each time the actor got an answer wrong (the actor would actually not be electrocuted, but would pretend to that effect). As the study progressed, the participants were instructed to increase the applied voltage to lethal levels for each wrong answer. It was seen that many complied when they were urged to do so by authority figures, despite the escalating pain that it seemed to cause the actors.

Conclusion:

It can be inferred from this experiment, that humans tend to submit to authority even against their better sense and morals.
